Sound familiar?
The phone rings for powerpoint repairs and smoke alarms that won't stop beeping, when what you actually want is switchboard upgrades and EV charger installs. The jobs worth your time.
Meanwhile there's an electrician in Dee Why who shows up at the top of Google Maps with 40 reviews. He's getting the EV charger jobs you're not. What is he doing that you're not?

SEO for electricians, in plain English.
This is what gets an electrician found on Google, the work agencies sell as SEO services for electricians. It comes down to three things: your Google listing, your website, and the other websites that link to you. Each one is real work, and none of it is ever finished.
Electrician as the main one, then one for each kind of work you want more of. Your Google Business Profile (the map listing people tap to call) gets one main category and up to nine more. Google says to use as few as it takes, and to pick ones that finish the sentence "this business is a...".
For EV chargers it's Electric vehicle charging station contractor. Solar energy system service if you do solar, Lighting contractor if lighting is a big part of your work. There's no "Emergency electrician" or "Level 2 electrician" category in Australia, whatever you've been told.
Yes. Your profile has a services list, and Google says a service you've listed may be highlighted when someone searches for it. Put in "EV charger installation" and "Switchboard upgrade" in the words a customer would use.
There's a second reason. When someone reviews an electrician, Google may ask them which service they had, and their answer shows on the review. So customers can tag their review "EV charger installation" without you ever asking them to mention it.
Each job you want more of, yes. On your own website, a Services page with fifteen dot points tells Google you do a bit of everything. A page about switchboard upgrades, with the boards you fit, the suburbs you cover and photos of real jobs, gives Google something to match when someone searches for exactly that. Same again for EV chargers.
Make each page properly different. Google's spam rules are against near-copies of a page aimed at different suburbs, so twenty suburb pages with only the name swapped will do you more harm than good.
Pages built around what people actually search, fast on a phone, set up so Google can read them, and checked in Search Console. It's a job in itself. Here's what it takes, roughly in the order I do it:
- Find the searches worth chasing. Before writing a page, check what people actually type and how many of them there are. Ahrefs (paid) shows monthly searches for any phrase and a difficulty score for how hard it is to get into the top results. Google's Keyword Planner is free, but you need a Google Ads account with billing details and a campaign set up to use it. Look for real numbers and low difficulty, for jobs you want: a few hundred people a month searching for one job in your area is worth a page.
- Use the words people search, naturally. Write "switchboard upgrade" if that's what customers type, in your headings and your text. Don't cram it in: Google counts keyword stuffing as spam.
- A title and description for every page. The title is the headline people see in Google's results, so it should say what the page is and where you are.
- Fast on a phone. Google says its ranking systems look to reward a good page experience, and it uses Core Web Vitals (how quickly a page loads, responds and settles) in ranking.
- Photos sized for the web. Google says images are often the biggest part of a page and can make it slow. Keep them sharp but small, give them short names that say what they are (switchboard-upgrade-dee-why.jpg, not IMG_0023.jpg), and a line of alt text.
- Your details marked up for Google. A bit of code called LocalBusiness structured data tells Google your hours and contact details in a form it reads directly.
- Secure (https). Google lists a secure site as part of a good page experience.
- Google Search Console. It's free from Google. It shows which searches your site turns up for, how often people click, and where you sit, and it emails you when Google finds a problem with your site. Without it you're guessing.
- A sitemap, handed to Google. A file listing every page on your site, submitted in Search Console. Google says a new site with few other websites linking to it is exactly the kind that benefits, since Google might not find its pages otherwise.
None of it is a one-off. New pages go up, photos get added, Google changes how it measures things, and Search Console turns up new problems. It's a lot to keep on top of after a day on the tools, and it's the part my clients hand to me.
Get listed on 20 or more other websites that link to you: directories, your trade association, local business groups, awards. Google says part of how well known you are comes from how many websites link to your business. Agencies call these backlinks. It means your own site isn't the only one that counts: the more decent local websites that link to you, the better. Where to start:
- Directories. Yellow Pages (the basic listing is free), True Local, Hotfrog and the rest.
- Your trade association. Master Electricians' "Find a Master Electrician", if you're a member.
- Local business groups. Your chamber of commerce's member directory. On the Beaches that's Business Northern Beaches or the Manly Business Chamber.
- Awards. The Local Business Awards. The Northern Beaches round had more than 2,150 applicants in 2026.
- The same details everywhere. Exactly the same business name, address and phone number on every one, matching your Google listing. Not "Beaches Electrical Co" on one and "Beaches Electrical Pty Ltd" on the next, or an old mobile on a listing you set up years ago and forgot about.
Each one means signing up, proving it's your business, writing a description, adding photos and hours, and checking back now and then so an old number doesn't creep in. Twenty of them is a lot of evenings. It's one of the first things I do for a new client.
On your website, and in any other ad. In NSW this one's the law. Clause 33 of the Home Building Regulation 2014 says a contractor licence holder has to put their name (or registered business name) and licence number in any advertisement of any kind, and electrical wiring work is covered. The maximum fine is $1,100 for a sole trader or $2,200 for a company, and NSW Fair Trading's guidance says the internet counts.
So your licence number goes in the footer of every page. Anyone comparing electricians can see straight away that you're licensed.
By saying it in plain words, on its own page and in your listing's description and services. There's no Google category for Level 2, so the words have to do the work.
Only accredited companies can do Level 2 work in NSW: running or changing the service line from the street and connecting the power to new or upgraded supplies. Customers look for it by name. Going by Ahrefs, about 250 people a month search "level 2 electrician northern beaches" alone. Link to the NSW Government's search of accredited providers so people can check you're on it.
Set your real opening hours on Google and keep "24/7" off your site. Google decides which electricians to show on the map by how well you match the search, how close you are, and how well known you are, which is where reviews come in. In late 2023 Google also said whether a business is open had become a stronger signal for a lot of searches (and that it might change). So your hours do real work.
List yourself as open 24 hours and you'll get the 2 am "the power's gone out" calls. If you'd rather do chargers and switchboards in business hours, your real hours are the way to get there. Google asks for your regular hours anyway.
Ask every customer, before you've packed up the van, and make it a ten-second job for them. That's what the Google Review Sign is for: they tap their phone on it and they're on your review page.
More reviews and good ratings can help your local ranking, Google says. What you can't do is steer them. Google's rules say a business can't ask for specific content, can't offer anything in return, and can't pick out only the happy customers to ask.
With a tracked number on your site and listing that rings straight through to your mobile. It shows where every call came from, so you can see whether the EV charger page is earning its keep. Your Google listing on its own counts taps on its call button and nothing else: not the people who ring from your website, not the ones who saved your number for later.

That's the work. A few evenings to set it up, then a bit every month to keep it going.
Rather be on the tools? I can do it for you.
I start by asking which electrical jobs you actually want more of.
We work out which jobs you want. More Level 2 work, like new connections and supply upgrades? Fewer 2 am callouts? Tell me the work and the suburbs you're after. You talk, I listen.
I build everything around those jobs. I find the searches your competitors are missing (the SEO bit), like the 150 people a month looking for an EV charger install on the Beaches. Then I build your website, Google Business Profile (your Maps listing) and directory listings around them. I write all the words too, you just look it over.
The right calls start coming in. I give you a Google Review Sign so every customer just taps to leave a review. When they mention the switchboard you upgraded, that tells Google it's work you do. You show up for more of those jobs, and they make up more and more of your week.
No vague reports. See what you're paying for.
Your dashboard shows every call and enquiry, your new reviews, and where you rank on Google for the jobs you're after.

Already got a website? It might be costing you work.
Happy with the site you've got, and just want the SEO? I get it. But getting found comes down to your site and your Google listing working as one, and that works best when the same person builds both and keeps them going. So it's the same Setup either way: a fresh site built around the jobs you want, and you keep your listing, your reviews and your domain.
Evolvere, a pilates studio in Lane Cove, had an old site. They'd paid someone for Google work years ago, then stopped, and nobody had looked after it since. A fresh new look had been on their to-do list for ages.
What they didn't know was that new competitors had moved into the area and were going after the exact searches Evolvere's customers made. They were too busy running their studio to notice.
I built them a new site, got their rankings back, and found new searches people use to look for what they do.

A note from me
I'm Ben. Before web design I worked at a car wrapping shop in Mona Vale. I started out unwrapping cars in the sun and worked my way up to running production.
We were flat out pumping through whatever walked in the door. Full wraps that took days for not much margin, and decals that weren't worth firing up the printer for. The work we actually wanted was fleet branding, the unglamorous but high-margin work of the industry. But customers couldn't see that we did it.
A few suburbs away was a bigger shop. Their whole brand and online presence was fleet branding, and they took the lion's share of the good jobs. They bought us out.
Everyone who's been in a trade for a few years works out which jobs are the good ones. But many of us are too busy keeping up with wages, rent and insurance to sort out our online presence, and we just hope the right work comes through the door. Hoping is what we did. The fleet shop deliberately went after the work they wanted.
Now I help tradies get more of the jobs they want, so they can say no to the ones they don't.
I'm in the reviews business. Here are mine.
5.01 Google reviewBen from Warm Welcome websites has done an outstanding job building Solarblock’s website and transforming our business from a busy B2B workshop into a growing retail operation. Our enquiries and bookings are growing month on month, thanks to Ben’s expertise in SEO and his ability to target our ideal customers. I was referred to Ben by another business owner who was extremely happy with his results, and now I can see why. If you want a great website that delivers real business growth, I highly recommend Ben and Warm Welcome websites Thanks, Ben, for helping take Solarblock to the next level!

Common questions from electricians
If yours isn't here, give me a call on 0405 507 941.
Setup is a one-off $4,990. Then it's $149/month for me on call - I keep your site live, make changes whenever you need them, and keep you found on Google. Hosting, your domain, professional email, the AI editor and call tracking are all rolled into that one price. Getting you set up on Google properly (20+ local directories, plus your Google Business Profile, the map listing people tap to call) is part of Setup, not an extra. If you're busy and want me running your Google listing for you too, that's Plus, $349/month for one location (+$200 for each extra). The mock-up is free, so you see your site before you pay anything.
Mostly Setup. In Setup I build your site around the searches for the jobs you want, set up your Google listing and get you on 20+ directories. That's the bulk of it, done before the monthly starts. Base is me on call: I keep your site live and fast, make changes when you need them, and check how you're going on Google 3 months after launch, then every 6, with any searches worth a new page. Plus is for when you're busy and want me running your Google listing too: replying to reviews, posting your job photos and checking every 3 months. It's $349/mo for one location, +$200/mo for each extra.
It's common, so don't panic. What matters is what you get for it. Ask which searches they're going after and how many people make them each month. Ask what they'll actually do in month one, and who owns the site and your Google listing if you leave. Then add it up over a year: their monthly times 12, against my Setup ($4,990) plus 12 months at $149/mo. And if anyone promises page one by a date, be careful. Nobody controls Google, me included.
Not for results, no. Setup pays for the work of building your site and getting you set up on Google, and that work gets done whether the phone rings in week 3 or week 10. That doesn't take away your rights under Australian Consumer Law: if I don't do the job properly, you're covered. What protects you is how it's set up. You see a mock-up of your site for free before you pay anything, so you know what you're getting. And the monthly has no lock-in, so if it's not working for you, you stop paying at the end of the month and keep everything I built.
You cancel. That's it. You own everything - your domain, your content, your Google Business Profile, every line of code - and if you leave I hand it all over within 48 hours. No exit fees, no notice period, no hostage situations. It stops at the end of the month you've paid for. What stops is the service itself: me on call, the AI editor, the monthly report and the Google checkups. Your domain is registered in your business name from day one. Its renewal, your hosting and your email are bundled into the monthly, so you'd move those to your next provider, and I'll help you get set up. I also swap your tracked number back to your direct number on Google and your website, so no calls go missing. I've heard too many stories of agencies holding domains hostage. That's not how I work.
Yes, that's most of what this is. Your site gets pages for EV chargers and switchboard upgrades, not "24/7 emergency electrician", and your Google listing shows the hours you actually work. Google has said whether you're open counts for more on a lot of searches, so with your real hours set you're much less likely to be the one getting the 2 am call when the power goes out. If you do want some after-hours work, say a couple of nights a week, we set it up that way instead.
In NSW, yes. The rule covers any advertisement of any kind for electrical work, and NSW Fair Trading says the internet counts, so your website does too. I put it in the footer of every page so it's covered everywhere at once. It also tells anyone weighing up a switchboard quote that you're licensed, before they've even rung.
Yes, on its own page. Only accredited companies can do Level 2 work in NSW, so the people searching for it can't just ring any electrician, and they do search for it: about 250 a month for "level 2 electrician northern beaches" alone. There's no Google category for Level 2, so your site and listing have to say it in plain words. I'd link to the NSW Government's search of accredited providers too, so customers can check you're on it.
If it's work you want more of, yes. Solar is one of the bigger searches on the Beaches, about 200 a month for "solar installation northern beaches". And it's work where accreditation matters to the customer: the government's solar and home battery discounts only apply when the installer is accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia (it took over from the Clean Energy Council in 2024). So your solar page says you're accredited and gives your accreditation number, and anyone can check it on SAA's website.
It can be, if you'd like more of your own customers. With builder work it's their schedule and usually their price. A homeowner who finds you on Google is ringing you, for a job you quote yourself, and if it goes well they're the one leaving the review and calling you back next time. Plenty of electricians keep the builder work and use their own site to fill the gaps with chargers and switchboards. There's no lock-in, so if the builders keep you flat out you can stop at the end of any month.
